The Valleys Regional Park is a vast geographical landscape spanning southwest from Llyn Lech Owain Country Park in Cross Hands all the way to Cwmcarn Forest Drive in the southeast. This area was once known as the South Wales Coalfields. Since the decline of the heavy mining industry, nature has reclaimed these stunning and unique landscapes.
Beyond wayfinding, my aim for the artwork was to capture a sense of what it is to be a part of the valleys and this most amazing natural environment. A place people are proud to call home inside and out. How health and wellbeing are as much about belonging to, feeling a part of, and connected to the valleys as they are about exercise and the outdoors.
Newport City Public Art Installation, 2020
“Coming Home in the City of Newport” is a narratively rich artwork that explores the theme of home and what it comes to mean to us, through a sense of storytelling. In response to an open brief, I initially researched the Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve, an environmental jewel of Newport, whose importance sometimes goes quietly unnoticed. The artwork merges from outside to inside and vice-versa depending on which way the viewer walks past. The outside wetlands blend into a homely interior, whose residents are symbolised by cherished keepsakes and hats of different kinds.
A playfully dark mural and exhibition of work that explores the sometimes tense relationship that exists between the Illustration and the Fine Art world.
These large panels form part of a series of works installed throughout the Children’s Wards at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.
The theme followed a young patient’s arrival at hospital, preparing for treatment, operation and recovery. I used the metaphor of diving into the sea to ease the anxiety of going under anaesthetic, then coming up for air and exploring the beach and rock pools with coming around and recovery.
